Several statues in Bilbao are covered with green t-shirts to ask for steps in favor of cannabis
The Basque associations in this field demand that the Basque Government develop the Law on Addictions to give legal guarantees to consumer clubs
Some of the most iconic sculptures in Bilbao have woken up this Thursday morning covered by green T-shirts that called for the development of a regulation that gives legal coverage to cannabis associations. In this way, green garments have been placed on the sculpture of Las Sirgueras (Uribitarte dock) and on the body of the historic socialist leader Ramón Rubial (near the Guggenheim), while one of the meninas, the work of Manolo Valdés, was They have covered their faces on Ercilla street.
The initiative has been promoted by Eusfac (the federation that brings together these groups) and which has been demanding the implementation of a regulation based on the Law on Addictions (approved in 2016) for seven years and that would allow these groups to function “with full legal guarantee ».
Cannabis associations and clubs, as well as the consumption of this substance in these premises, are legal, but the regulations prohibit the cultivation and removal of the substance outside these centers. This has led to the opening of various legal proceedings against various officials and activists, who have sometimes even faced prison sentences.
“The government is breaking its word”
Ausfac maintains that the development of article 83 of the aforementioned Law on Addictions would put an end to this problem and provide legal coverage to these groups. “Today is a symbolic mobilization, framed on the day of San Kanuto,” they said in a statement. “We denounce that the Basque Government ignores what the law itself establishes and includes its regulatory development, despite the fact that seven years have passed since its approval in Parliament, the seat of popular sovereignty in this country.”
In his opinion, the inaction and delay shown by the authorities is “inconceivable and unjustifiable.” “The regional Executive, a specialist in talking about non-compliance made by other administrations, never looks in the mirror and does not keep his word.”
