160th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprising. Presentation of memorabilia at the Museum of Krakow
Souvenirs related to the January Uprising, e.g. A creative patriotic element, an insurgent tapestry with an eagle and the inscription: “God save Poland” and the shackles that people used to wear at that time to watch in the Krzysztofory Palace.
The presentation is a national program “Kraków from the beginning, without end”.
The memorabilia on display include: a shotgun made by the well-known Krakow gunsmith Ignacy Hoefelmajer and the painting “The funeral of an insurgent of 1863 in Kazimierz in Krakow” by Wacław Koniuszko.
This year it fell 160th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprisingthe ongoing Polish independence uprising during the partitions.
Krakow was then in the partitions. There were no fights here, but the border with the Russian partition was several kilometers away and Kraków provided a supply base for the insurgents – reminds Piotr Hapanowicz, manager of the Krzysztofory Palace branch.
After the fighting broke out, many young people, including students, made their way from Kraków to the insurgent units. they also intended to embark on the transport of food, medicine and weapons purchased in Vienna. Thanks to Krakow’s doctors and students, a branch in kindergartens and manors along the border, as well as in Krakow itself in nursing homes and monasteries, directors and hospitals where help is provided to the wounded.
They also create here (in Ojców to be precise) a select insurgent unit “Zuawi of death” founded by Franciszek Rochebrune, who fought bravely in the uprising. Based on the application of the module of this branch – said Piotr Hapanowicz. The sacrifice of the Cracovians was very great. Several thousand men went to the uprising, and their expedition was unfortunately broken up by the Russian influence after crossing the national cordon.
Many former participants of the uprising lived in Krakow, e.g. Adam Chmielowski – later Saint Brat Albert, Marian Dubiecki and General Edmund Różycki.
