Study on the course of infections: Vaccination protects pregnant women from permitted by Omicron
Vaccination protects pregnant women from safe by Omikron
Vaccination against Covid-19 reduces the risk of death in expectant mothers from an omicron infection. This is the result of an international study.
According to a large-scale international study, a corona infection with the omicron variant during pregnancy increases the risk of death in expectant mothers – especially in unvaccinated women. The risks were lower in vaccinated women.
A corona vaccination also protects pregnant women effectively, wrote the Geneva University Hospital involved in the study in a statement on Wednesday. A total of 41 hospitals in 18 countries were involved in the study, which was published in the journal The Lancet.
The scientists examined data from 1545 pregnant women infected with the omicron variant. This data was compared with the dossiers of 3073 pregnant women without corona.
In particular, the risk of preeclampsia – an increase in blood pressure with kidney damage – was higher in women with severe symptoms. Overweight or obese women with severe symptoms were at greatest risk, according to the study.
Vaccination as routine care
Vaccinated women, on the other hand, have a low risk of being admitted to an intensive care unit. According to the study, full vaccination is the best form of prevention. The study also found that mRNA vaccines were the most effective. However, vector vaccines would also have offered adequate protection.
“This study clearly shows the benefits of vaccination during pregnancy. It helps us in our recommendation to include vaccination against Covid-19 in the routine care of pregnant women,” said co-author Begoña Martinez de Tejada Weber of Geneva University Hospital in the statement.
Vaccination rate too low
“It is worrying that four to seven percent of unvaccinated women who received the omicron variant during pregnancy developed severe symptoms,” added study leader José Villar from the University of Oxford.
Although the omicron variant is overall less harmful than previous variants, the proportion of unvaccinated pregnant women worldwide is still at high risk. The authors conclude that full vaccination coverage of pregnant women is still insufficient even in the published countries.
