Spring in the middle of winter! Cherries and viburnums bloomed in Warsaw!
I don’t think anyone expected such a view in mid-January. Viburnum trees have bloomed in the Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw! What’s more, pink flowers also grow on cherry trees growing along Świętokrzyska Street in the center of Warsaw. Is this a harbinger of an earlier coming?

It is gloomy outside the windows, and the potential night frost is intertwined with temperatures above zero during the day. After a hard hit of winter in Warsaw before Christmas prayer thaw, and the first days of 2023 brought heat records. The effect of obtaining a “real” snowy and frosty winter can be seen in nature. Some of the trees are already budding. What’s more, some trees even bloomed!
“Suddenly than usual we smelled a strange, strange smell in the Garden. Near the department of medicinal plants it smelled – #kalina bodnantska ‘Dawn’ (Viburnum × bodnantense ‘Dawn’). It is her subtle pink flowers that spread that delicate fragrance this time of year. And a few meters further – orange fruits of viburnum (Viburnum opulus) still hang. Beautiful variety!” – social media messages The Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw.
As the garden explains, usually viburnum blooms from February to April.
Blooming trees in the center of Warsaw
Even more surprising may be the sight of cherry blossoms that bloomed in mid-January in Centrum of Warsaw. Interestingly, it is also not an anomaly! “These trees are the pink cherry of the ‘Autumnalis’ variety (Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’). It is a species originating from Japan. The feature of this fruit variety is that it blooms already in autumn and blooms intermittently for cultivation” – explained in fact with “Stołeczna” prof. dr hab. Piotr Latocha from the Department of Environmental Protection and Dendrology of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.
As it was added, these trees usually do not set fruit in our country and perform a simple decorative function. Keep does not bloom in Poland in winter because the temperature is below zero. This year, however, an unusually warm winter resulted in beautiful pink flowers on the trees.
