Vancouver Island’s Morgan Jackson helps Team Canada win gold in Sweden (VIDEO)
Team Canada’s U18 women brought back gold medals from the IIHF World Championship for the second year in a row after knocking out Sweden 10-0.
Morgan Jackson was one of only three British Columbians to make the team and she was Vancouver Island’s only representative in the arena during the tournament.
The 16-year-old forward played all five games in the IIHF Women’s World Championship. She didn’t score any goals or assists throughout the championship, but her presence was crucial on the ice and she was part of the team that dominated the tournament.
“So fun to see, so proud of this group. “We knew they were going to bring it today, but to see them celebrate the little things, be happy for each other was amazing,” assistant coach Tara Watchorn said.
“This group was special, without a doubt. To see them represent their country with pride, class and so much skill was great fun.”
With nearly five minutes remaining in the final period, Jackson had a chance to make it 11-0 when she eluded two Swedish defenders and chipped the goalie to put the puck into the back of the net, but the referees called a no-goal after a review due to goalie interference.
Still, Jackson received an outpouring of support from her islanders who eagerly await her return and will see her hockey career continue with pride.
