Caroline of Monaco and Pierre Casiraghi say goodbye to Prince Max of Baden, cousin of Charles III
Carolina of Monacoaccompanied by his son Pierre Casiraghi and his brother the prince albertflew to Salem, Germany on Friday to attend the funeral of Maximilian, Margrave of Baden, who died on December 29 at the age of 89. The funeral of the son of Prince Philip’s older sister, the Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, were attended by representatives of various European royal houses. Neither the king Charles III, cousin of the deceased, nor any of his siblings were present. Spanish Queen Emeritus Sofiasecond cousin of the deceased prince, was not either, since she is finalizing the preparations for the funeral of her brother, Constantine of GreeceMonday in Athens.
Unlike the absences, perhaps motivated by the link of the grandson of the last Chancellor of the German Empire with the Nazi party, those present at this second funeral of Prince Max of Baden – the first was reserved for friends and members closest to the family. Caroline of Monaco was joined by Ernest of Hanover Jr.son of his husband and his first wife Chantal Hochuliaccompanied by his wife, Ekaterina Malysheva.

Born in 1933 in Salem, Maximilian is the eldest of three children born to Theodora of Greece and Bertold of Baden. After breaking off her engagement with her first cousin Beatrix of Hohenlohe-Lanberburgdaughter of the princess margaritahe married in 1966 the Archduchess Valerie from Austria, great-granddaughter of Empress Sissi, with whom he had four children. The second, the first son Bernardsucceeds him as Margrave of Baden.
