Fábio Magalhães is from Braga and became the most capped handball player in Portugal
Handball player Fábio Magalhães, who surpassed Eduardo Filipe’s all-time international cap record, said today that, from a year ago, his goal was to reach 200 calls to the main team.
“I will try to keep myself fit and available. If the coach thinks I can help, I’ll always be available”, said the left-back, aged 34, after Portugal’s victory over South Korea, for Group D of the World Cup, in Kristianstad, Sweden.
In Portugal’s debut against Iceland, Fábio Magalhães went on to add 272 caps, which today increased to 273 – 175 of which in the main team -, surpassing Eduardo Filipe, who for 23 years was the Portuguese handball player with the most national caps (271). .
“I’m going to say the usual spiel, but I can only say that it’s a huge pride. It’s still just numbers, but the highlight of my career is always representing the national team, which is why I feel great pride”, said Fábio Magalhães.
The FC Porto player was confident that when he started his career in the national team “I didn’t even think about it because I thought it was unattainable”, but meanwhile the increase in the number of competitions and games allowed him to make more international appearances.
The podium of the players with the most caps is made up of the three left-backs, as Carlos Resende is in third place, with 253 calls to the ‘quinas’ team, and with the particularity of having passed through FC Porto and ABC.
The Portuguese team is in Kristianstad to compete in Group D of the preliminary round of the Handball World Cup, taking place until January 29, in Sweden and Poland, and today they added the first two points against South Korea (32-24 ).
