It has been revealed that the agricultural activities and forests of the ancient city of Istanbul under the management of thousands of football fields have expanded with mega projects directed to natural and rural areas. Within the scope of IMM’s Koru Istanbul project, it has been determined that 1140 hectares of agriculture will be realized with a forest area of approximately 5 million trees for Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Istanbul Northern Marmara Motorway.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Department of Reconstruction and Urbanization, City Planning Directorate, has been carrying out the Koru Istanbul project for about a year. 5 million forest areas have disappeared

Coastal areas were also preserved
The details of the determinations made within the scope of the project are as follows:
- For Istanbul Airport, approximately 13 million wooded forest areas (5,996 hectares), 1,529 hectares (2,150 football fields size) agricultural land and 100 hectares (142 football fields size) water surface area were destroyed.
- For WPP structures applied in natural and rural areas of Istanbul, approximately 1 million wooded forest area (468 hectares) and 428 hectares (602 football fields) have been placed on agricultural land.
- For industrial wood production, approximately 118,847 hectares (167.340 football fields) of forest area has been preserved in the Northern Forests of Istanbul.
- Approximately 5,747 hectares (8,094 football fields) of forest area and 2,196 hectares (3,093 football fields) of agricultural land have been expanded for the mining fields opened in the natural and rural areas of Istanbul.
- Approximately 545 hectares of forest area (the size of 767 football fields) and 10 hectares (10 football fields wide) of agricultural land have been expanded for the solid waste fields opened in the natural and rural areas of Istanbul.
- Approximately 891 hectares (1,255 football fields) of forest area and 69 hectares of agricultural land (the size of 97 football fields) have been expanded for the excavation dump sites opened in the natural and rural areas of Istanbul.
- In the industrial operations operation carried out in Istanbul between 2006 and 2019, 324,000 wooded forest areas (1,824 hectares) and 162 hectares of agricultural land (the size of 2,569 football fields) were destroyed.
- Between 2006 and 2019, a forest area of 22.8 million trees (11.381 hectares) and 12,581 hectares of agricultural land (17,720 football fields) were destroyed in Istanbul between 2006 and 2019.
- For the metro lines and high-speed train project, which are being implemented in the natural and rural areas of Istanbul, approximately 1 million wooded forest area (600 hectares) and 328 hectares (463 football fields) of agricultural land have been expanded.
- For agricultural activities, 867 hectares (1,220 football fields) of forest area has been preserved in the Northern Forests of Istanbul.
- For the Melen Drinking Water Line Project, which was implemented to bring water to Istanbul from the Düzce Melen Dam, 87,000 wooded forest area (433 hectares) and 80 hectares (112 football fields) of agricultural land were expanded.
- Due to the edge filling operations in Istanbul, 3,872 hectares (5,453 football fields) of coastal area has been expanded.
