More than 600 secondary school students across mainland France, overseas territories and departments and internationally, have been selected by the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco as part of the “Oceano for All” competition.
Throughout the school year, teams from the Oceanographic Institute support students and their teachers in discovering the marine world and realization of a concrete project for the Ocean.
A total of 25 establishments were selected, with particular attention paid to applications from establishments located in Priority Education Networks (REP) and in rural areas.
Estelle Lefeburegodmother of the operation, supports this great competition in order to awaken an ecological awareness among the younger generations, around a collective, creative and committed project.
Students will take part in several webinars led by the Oceanographic Institute, with the intervention of researchers and oceanographers, and will participate in activities and workshops in the field, in order to work with their teachers on a project related to the Development Goals Durable set by the United Nations.
In April, a jury made up of professionals will meet to designate the 3 winning classes which will be rewarded during a prize-giving ceremony on June 13 at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.
Previously intended for primary school classes in the PACA region, the major “Oceano for All” competition, organized every year by the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, is broadening its scope of action. It is now aimed at colleges in Monaco, mainland France, overseas territories and departments, and is also open to international and French-speaking countries. Throughout the school year, teams from the Oceanographic Institute support students and their teachers in discovering the marine world. An operation aimed at raising the ecological awareness of younger generations around a collective, creative and committed project.
Organized since 2014 in collaboration with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, French National Education and the Monegasque Department of National Education, Youth and Sports, the “Oceano for All” competition allows the realization of a concrete project for the protection of the ocean. For this new edition, sponsored by Estelle Lefébure, founder of the Spero Mare association, 25 establishments have been selected, i.e. more than 600 students, with particular attention paid to applications from establishments located in Priority Education Networks (REP) and in rural area. “With “Oceano for All”, we support young people in carrying out collective projects in line with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations. It is about training and supporting the citizens of tomorrow in their commitment to the ocean! », explains Robert Calcagno, Director General of the Institute.
TAILOR-MADE SUPPORT
The selected classes preferred, throughout the school year, the support of the teaching team of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, specialized in scientific and cultural mediation. Numerous online educational workshops, focusing on the main topical themes, will thus be presented. In order to enrich and nourish the exchanges, researchers and oceanographers will be regularly invited to participate. “In order for students to become true ambassadors of the Ocean and to be able to materialize their projects, we are going to offer innovative and interactive tools, aiming to make people discover the Ocean at 360°: discovery of ecosystems and their biodiversity, understanding the role of the ocean in regulating the climate and analyzing the impacts of human activities,” says Tiziana Caporale, head of the Institute’s Animation and Education department. Apart from the webinars, teachers and their students could therefore have access to multiple educational resources: infographics, videos, quizzes, thematic sheets, etc. to guide them in their understanding of the subjects and major issues related to the marine world.
Also, following the “Indian Ocean” mission led by Monaco Explorations (October-November 2022) between Reunion, Mauritius and the Seychelles, the students will be able to use the resources produced by the scientists on board and have been able, for some, to interact directly with their teams. Finally, the Oceanographic Institute will allow students to discover maritime professions through workshops and media, and to be put in touch with professionals in the sector.
EDUCATION AND AWARENESS
By providing the necessary resources to understand the ocean in all its complexity, the Oceanographic Institute confirms its mission of scientific and cultural mediation with the public and especially young people. In addition to contributing to the sustainable development goals set by the UN, “Oceano for All” enables middle school students to forge a lasting bond with the sea by getting involved in a collective project and source of social ties. Through it, many people – families and friends of the participants – will also be supported.
THREE PRIZES AT THE KEY
A two-day stay in the Principality of Monaco and two endowments of 5,000 euros for the organization of ocean awareness activities will be offered to the winning classes. With the aim of inspiring and arousing the commitment of other young people for the Ocean, the Oceanographic Institute will also offer support to all classes to help them achieve their long-term projects. .
