Heavily pregnant asylum seeker put on the street by Brussels hospital | Abroad
A heavily pregnant asylum seeker fleeing the circumcision of her daughter was made by the university hospital Jette in Brussels when they had to fall.
An employee of the emergency service asked the 23-year-old asylum seeker from Mauritania to pay 2,000 euros first because they had no health insurance. She didn’t have that money in her pocket and so she was sent away. Her son was finally born in the Brugmann hospital a little further on.
According to UZ Jette, this was an exceptional case. “Basically, we make sure everyone signs up, reads the person’s status,” a statement says. “We are taking this seriously. The employee involved was therefore punished.”

The approximately 2,700 asylum seekers on Fedasil’s list receive not only no reception, but also no medical care. That is why more asylum seekers than before are seeking refuge in the emergency services of nearby hospitals, Doctors Without Borders also confirms.
The organization is setting up a medical center for the application center for asylum seekers in Brussels. Between 85 and 90 percent of their patients are asylum seekers, says David Vogel, the center’s coordinator.
After the delivery, none of the midwives at Brugmann Hospital wanted to work with Fedasil because the agency was too slow to reimburse the costs. “If we are contacted with a view to overdue payment, we will of course try to make this right as quickly as possible. Incidentally, we have also recruited extra staff for this”, says Lies Gilis, spokesperson for Fedasil.
