The deployment of CCTV cameras – or video protection, it depends – will continue with a vengeance in 2023 at Toulouse. As Jean-Luc Moudenc recalled Thursday, January 5, 2023 during his greetings to the press, their development has gone at full speed in recent years… and it will accelerate further.
550 cameras at the end of 2023, compared to 24 in 2014
“In 2022, we crossed the threshold of 500 cameras on the city of Toulouse, when there were 24 in 2014″, when the aedile took over the dreams of the Capitol, after the parenthesis of the Cohen years.
“Today, there are 510, and we are installing around 40 in 2023”.
1,300 cameras installed in metro lines
In addition to this arsenal scattered in the streets of the Pink City, an even more impressive device will be deployed this year inside the metro itself, where “we have had sometimes worrying feedback from users lately”, blew the mayor, who put forward a figure. He announced the deployment of “1,300 cameras in the frames of the metro of Toulouse”, where a first test has been carried out before the holidays.
“Our opponents no longer dare to speak out”
Asked about the perception of this all-out deployment by the population, Jean-Luc Moudenc believes that the debate is now settled, the cameras having, according to him, proven themselves.
“In Toulouse, there were a lot of debates [autour des caméras de vidéosurveillance, ndlr]but today, it is a subject on which our opponents no longer dare to express themselves”.
“Several thousand interventions are triggered by CCTV operators each year,” added Emilion Esnault. According to the figures put forward by the deputy mayor in charge of security, the number of court requisitions of images captured by the cameras at bondi “from 50 in 2014 to 1,850 in 2020, and even 2,150 in 2021″.
And still according to him, “in 2021, out of 1,642 arrests followed by presentations before a judicial police officer for the most serious offences, 849 were made thanks to video”, or more than half.
From 165 to 430 municipal police officers in ten years
In addition to the material, the first magistrate and his team also gargle human investment on safety: for years, the number of municipal police has indeed continued to grow in the 4e city in France, which signed the famous “Integrated Security Contract” with the State at the end of 2020.
“The goal is to have the means to double the number of patrols on the ground, in the neighborhoods”.
Alongside the allocation of national staff, “we have a commitment to create 100 additional positions » within the municipal police, recalled the mayor. The city currently has “370 municipal police officers on duty”, according to the mayor’s count, when they were only 330 in 2020and only 165 in 2014. This will therefore go crescendo in the coming years: these agents will number 408 in 2023, then 430 in 2024.
New national police?
“At the same time, we obtained the creation of 111 national police stations”, noted Jean-Luc Moudenc. “94 are in office”. Whether the State – which had initially promised these reinforcements “by the end of 2021” – a ignition delay on the initial schedule, “we will have the last 17 agents within three months, Gérald Darmanin confirmed it to me”.
The elected officials, who have not hesitated to weigh that “the crime figures have fallen in Toulouse in 2022”, do not intend to reduce the sails on their claims for all that. “We are going to open new negotiations » with the State, slipped Jean-Luc Moudenc, who announces the color: “I do not intend to stop there and I want get more police.”
