In retirement, Christine benefits tirelessly from the architectural richness and cultural effervescence of the city where she practiced as a nurse. “Heritage, exhibitions, theatre…, we are spoiled in Avignon, with the bonus of a natural environment of great beauty”.
Small in size, big in history! Avignon is the largest Gothic complex in Europe, registered with Unesco for its historic center. In a pocket handkerchief, it brings together the Palais des Papes, our jewel, but also the Pont Saint-Bénézet, which makes you dance in circles in song. And then the Petit Palais Museum with works from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, not forgetting the ramparts. You can get there by entering the bridge and go up to the garden of the Rocher des Doms. It climbs, but what a panorama of the city, the Alpillesthe Gard plain, the Mont Ventoux…
Intramural, Avignon collects squares, each more charming than the next: Place Saint-Didier with its village atmosphere and its cafés in the shade of tall hackberry trees, Place Saint-Pierre, a meeting place for lovers, Place Pie with its Halles gourmet or the Place des Carmes with its popular Saturday market. You have to get lost in the narrow streets, discover the nestled gardens, the private courtyards. We fell in love with rue des Teinturiers, along the Sorgue, with plane trees and waterwheels. Wine bars, restaurants, shops and many theaters enliven it all year round.
