Proposal to turn the pedestal of the former Konev monument into a monument with a destroyed Russian tank
Bogusław Sonik, member of the KO and chairman of the Maj77 Association, who was the initiator of the concrete plinth of the former monument to the Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev in Krakow, painted in Ukrainian colors, in order to walk on it the wreck of a Russian tank.
According to him, the pedestal could thus become “a monument to the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian people against the Russian aggressor.” Sonik made such a proposal in a letter sent to the Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, Wasyl Zwarycz.
The concrete pedestal on which the monument to the Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev stood at the end of the People’s Republic of Poland is located at ul. Home Army in Krakow. In March last year, the pedestal was painted blue and yellow – in the Ukrainian national colors. In this way, the originators paid tribute to the defenders of Ukraine and expressed their attitude towards the war.
“In March 2022, on my initiative, this pedestal was created as an expression of opposition to white Ukraine and the murder of the population and the barbaric bombing of cities. Russian” – indicated Sonik in a letter to the ambassador.
According to him, there is currently humanitarian, material, military, but also symbolic help, that since Ukraine came to your independence, we support its path to another and another.
“This pedestal is notoriously destroyed by vandals, or it is Russian activity aimed at dividing our nations, which is why I propose that this pedestal become a monument to the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian people against the Russian aggressor and replace the former monument of the Marshal of the Red Army, the wreck of the Russian tank destroyed by the Ukrainian army during the ongoing Russian invasion” – the creator’s idea in letters to the ambassador.
The Kraków monument to Marshal Ivan Stepanovich Konev was erected in 1987. In 1944-45, Konev was the commander of the 1st Ukrainian Front, whose troops occupied Kraków on January 18, 1945. In 1955, he received the title of honorary citizen of the city of Krakow, which was taken away from him in 1992. In 1991, the monument was removed. The street running next to it was also changed from Koniewo to the current Armii Krajowej.
