Burnley opts out of the hunt for Sweden’s international, says the reporter
Burnley are backing out of a deal to sign centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal from Djurgården. reporter Alan Nixon have said.
Burnley have exploited the European market well in their new era under the guidance of Vincent Kompany.
Plenty of talent has come over from the continent to lead the Clarets in their bid to return to the Premier League, and given the success they’ve had so far, you’d think they’ll continue to recruit from abroad going forward.
In fact, one man who appears to have been on their radar is Swedish centre-back Ekdal, who plays in his home country for Djurgården.
However, The Sun reporter Nixon has now had his say Patreon that Burnley are backing out of a deal for the 24-year-old.
He notes that the lack of playing time of late and the potential difficulties with a work permit have led to the Clarets choosing not to make a deal for Ekdal. The Swedish Allsvenskan runs between April and November, so Ekdal’s last competitive outing came at the beginning of November against Shamrock Rovers in the UEFA Europe Conference.
One to revisit?
Given the reasons why Burnley are backing out of a deal for Ekdal, perhaps this move could be more feasible in the summer.
He would be in the middle of the Allsvenskan season and the summer break would give plenty of time for the work permit situation to resolve itself, so it will be interesting to see if the door opens again for a deal further down the line.
Ekdal is a two-time Swedish national team player after making his debut in the summer of 2022, and excluding a year-long stint in America with UNC Wilmington, he has spent his entire career playing in his home country.
