Freedom for art in the Künstlerhaus Salzburg
The artist’s house on the Karolinger Bridge, painted orange through and through, is both an eye-catcher and an invitation. With its doors wide open, it invites visitors to come closer and engage with contemporary art from a wide variety of perspectives.
Walk in!
A constantly changing range of international, contemporary art awaits us inside the Künstlerhaus. You should take your time to let the varied impressions work on you.
der Salzburg Art Association, which is based in the Künstlerhaus, is dedicated to presenting current trends in contemporary, international art. The Künstlerhaus is about encounters between and with artists as well as a lively examination of art, art theory and cultural politics. Of the approximately 550 members of the association, around 350 are artists. 21 studios, which are (unfortunately) not accessible to visitors, offer space for artists.
Was unexpected
All forms of contemporary art flow into the program with a focus on new media, film and video installations, conceptual art and photography. But also sculptural art and painting – partly room-high – characterize the varied program on 500 m² of exhibition space. Some of it is loud and colourful, some is calm and orderly, often thought-provoking.
The sunset cinema takes place on warm summer nights, where art films by a wide variety of filmmakers are staged and attract numerous visitors.
Numerous events round off the program with lively get-togethers between artists and guests.
Historical delicacies
From the time it was founded in 1844, the Salzburg Art Association made it its mission to open up contemporary art to the bourgeoisie as well. Today unthinkable: At that time, the works of art were still sold via lotteries in order to spare the public the decision when choosing the works of art.
Even today, the Künstlerhaus serves as a meeting place for artists and those interested in art.
Physical delicacies – art break
I am Tula, the bistro in the Künstlerhaus is an excellent place to spend a break or two. In addition to coffee specialties and teas, vegan, vegetarian, internationally inspired dishes as well as cakes and tarts, it also offers its guests a fantastic view of the Salzach.
Our tip: be open and curious. Take the time and just let it work!
Another tip: The glass terrace of the bistro is always worth a visit in the warm season, even if you don’t enjoy art!
