San Marino: Italian immigrants in France on display at Dogana
French culture and language will be present in San Marino, in the headquarters of the Alliance Française at the socio-cultural center of Dogana, with the exhibition “Ciao Italia! a century of Italian immigration in France (1860-1960)”
It is a traveling exhibition conceived and created by the Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration de Paris – Palais de la Porte Dorée. Its circulation in Italy is coordinated by the Institut français Italia. A geographical, socio-economic and cultural itinerary of Italian immigrants in France from the Risorgimento to the Dolce Vita years.
Exchanges between France and Italy have been numerous since Antiquity and go well beyond the military conquest of “Gaul” by Rome. In the Middle Ages, men, women, goods and ideas crossed the Alps, spreading a sort of “Italian model” in France and throughout Europe. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, approximately 26 million Italian men and women emigrated for both economic and political reasons. Some of them went to France, which at the time lacked manpower. Italians thus become the most numerous foreigners in France from the beginning of the 20th century until the 1960s; however, their integration did not go smoothly. Between distrust and desire, violence and passion, rejection and integration, the exhibition Ciao Italia! tells this story highlighting the contribution of Italians to French society and culture.
The exhibition is inaugurated on January 6 with an introduction by prof. Jérôme Cazenave, holder of a master’s degree in Social and Contemporary History and native linguistic expert of the University of Urbino.
