Kenneth Branagh in San Marco as Poirot for the filming of «A Haunting in Venice»
A book held by the arm, a long blue coat, a wide-brimmed hat and that unmistakable curled moustache. On Friday 6 January, while awaiting the exit of the Magi from the clock tower in Piazza San Marco, none other than Kenneth Branagh as Detective Hercule Poirot. The production of An obsession in Veniceannounced by 20th century studios last October, landed in the lagoon after the first takes on Halloween at Pinewood Studios in London. The film inspired by the novel by Agatha Christie Poirot and the Massacre of the Innocents, directed by and interpreted by the Oscar-winning British actor Branagh. Poirot, now retired and living in a sort of voluntary exile, participates in spite of himself in a disturbing post-war Venice in a séance in a decadent palace: but one of the guests is murdered and Poirot finds himself immersed in a new mystery all from to solve.
The cast in the lagoon
A Haunting in Venice, the third 20th Century Studios film based on a novel by Agatha Christie, established the filmmaker team di 2017 Murder on the Orient Express and 2022 Murder on the Nile. Among the stars who will figure next to Branagh, it was announced Jamie Dornan (Mr. Gray in Fifty Shades of Gray), the Italian Riccardo Scamarcio (Caravaggio’s shadow), Kyle Allen (Rosaline), Camille Cottin (Call my agent!), Tina Fey (30 Rock). In the Serenissima, the cast should shoot until mid-January. There are many locations, some of which follow those chosen by Tom Cruise in his Mission Impossible: Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio and San Boldo, the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Campo Santo Stefano, the Marciana area and Rio della Canonica, but also Campo San Samuele and Malipiero palace. There will be no filming on the water with stage gondolas, vintage boats and 1950s taxis.
A lovely city
This is a fantastic development of the character of Hercule Poirot and also of the Agatha Christie franchise – Branagh said announcing the production – based on a complex and little known mystery tale, set on Halloween in a visually enchanting cityan amazing opportunity for us filmmakers, and we’re relishing the chance to deliver something truly spine-tingling to our loyal cinematic audience.
