San Marino. In one year 205 new births: never so few for over 25 years
The crisis in the birth rate continues unabated in San Marino, as in other Western countries. Fewer and fewer children are born.
This has a significant impact on social dynamics and above all on the public welfare system. For decades, the education, health and pension systems were tailored to a society in which births outnumbered deaths, workers (young people) outnumbered pensioners (elderly) and in which more than 300 children were born every year.
Today, indeed for several years, these cornerstones are being reversed: more deaths than births, the average age rises also thanks to the increase in life expectancy, the ratio between workers and pensioners drops to almost breakeven , births reached 200 per year.
With a whole host of important repercussions from the pension system, to that of educationto that of health care.
To certify this trend are the data for 2022 issued by the Civil Status Office.
In the last 12 months the newborns have been just 205 (98 males and 107 females). It is the lowest figure since Upecedes published its bulletin, so at least since the late 90s. For comparison: 6 years ago there were 262, 11 years ago 325, 21 years ago 315.
As for i deaths, some have happened in the past year 263 (135 males and 128 females), carrying the natural balance (i.e. the difference between births and deaths) a minus 58 and thus consolidating a trend that since 2017 has seen more deaths than those born.
To the detriment of these numbers, in 2022 the residents of the Republic of San Marino increased by 114 units, reaching the number of 33,812, thanks to the immigration of 350 people (189 males and 161 females). Knowledge per emigration is equal to 178 units (100 males and 79 females).
Last year’s statistics also indicate that been celebrated 100 weddings and 24 civil unions. In addition, 8 individuals were born occasionally (4 males and 4 females) and 3 individuals died occasionally (1 male and 2 females).
