here are the major projects planned for 2023
Works as part of the extension of the tramway, urban beach, square under renovation… A series of major projects is currently underway in Marseille.
From the future Olympic marina to the urban beach project near the Mucem, via the new cycle path between the Plage des Catalans and the Old Port, Marseille will still live to the rhythm of many construction sites all year round.
Among them, the requalification of Place Castellane continues as part of the extension of line 3 of the tramway. The latter will connect the North to the South of the city by 2025. The roundabout which will have been revealed until then on the square will disappear in favor of a pedestrian area.
A blessing in disguise according to Chantale, a resident of the square, inconvenienced by the work but impatient to see the result: “It’s not easy. But we have to go through it since the tram is going to be lengthened. Place Castellane will be improved. In any case, we hope so because it has really lost its luster”.
This project is led by the Aix-Marseille Metropolis and is part of the metropolitan travel plan, adopted in December 2021, at a cost of 300 million euros per year over ten years.
Pool, recreation and the Olympics
The Roucas Blanc nautical base is also under construction for the 2024 Olympic Games. It will become an Olympic marina and will host the competition’s sailing events. Ultimately, 600 ships will be accommodated.
“The project includes the construction of approximately 7,000 m² of buildings and the reorganization of 17,000 m² of outdoor spaces as well as a redevelopment of the basin”, specifies the municipality on its website.
Between Catalans beach and the Old Port, a two-way cycle path is under construction. On the other side of the quay, an urban beach at the foot of the Mediterranean villa should also see the light of day by the summer of 2023. A new bathing place in order to “promote learning to swim”, advances the town hall .
In the Joliette district, the J1 hangar of the large maritime port of Marseille-Fos is also being repaired. The disused industrial building will offer an outdoor swimming pool, a leisure center and even co-working spaces by 2024.
