In Salzburg, more than 47,000 people bought the newly introduced climate ticket for public transport last year: according to the Salzburg Transport Association, the expectations for the first year have been far exceeded.
Together with the school tickets, more than 15 percent of the population have an annual ticket for public transport. In the first year of the new ticket, those responsible expected around 20,000 sales – in the end there were more than twice as many last year. The “Edelweiß” climate ticket for senior citizens is particularly popular – this ticket accounts for almost 20 percent of all sales.
365 euros for an annual ticket – prices have not been increased
One reason for the interest might be the price. Before the 2021 tariff reform, an annual ticket cost more than 1,500 euros; today it is 365 euros. For 2023, the tariffs were frozen and not increased in all areas of life, despite inflation. In addition, taking children, dogs and bicycles with you is now uniformly regulated, also for the “Salzburg Plus”, “Edelweiß”, “Special” for people with disabilities, “U26” and for students climate tickets.
Seniors: Grandchildren up to the age of 15 can travel for free
As of this year, holders of the senior citizens’ card can also take their grandchildren with them free of charge if they are under the age of 15. In addition, passengers can also take their bikes with them free of charge on the Pinzgau and Salzburg local trains. The additional services of the climate ticket Austria were also expanded and harmonized in Salzburg.
