Berlin fire brigade “stunned and sad” after New Year’s Eve
The conclusion of the Berlin fire brigade after the chaotic New Year’s Eve in the capital is clear: “We were surprised by the mass and intensity of the attacks on our emergency services,” they say. To publish the rescuers reports that make them “stunned and sad”. This includes:
- “Looting of emergency vehicles by hooded people”
- “15 injured emergency services, one of them hospitalized”
- “Eye injury from pepper spray and blunt force trauma to an emergency responder”
- “Targeted fire with pyrotechnics during the extinguishing work”
- “Beer crates and fire extinguishers thrown at vehicles”
- “Obstruction of operational measures by barricades”
- “Heavy damage to several vehicles from pyrotechnics, so that they have to be taken out of service”
- “Banging Gun Pointed To Face”
The Berlin fire brigade summed up that they were “very well prepared”. Now it is time to prepare. “Based on the initial feedback from our emergency services, extensive offers of help for post-operation care have already been submitted,” write the rescuers.
State fire director: “This behavior cannot be justified by anything”
38 attacks were registered via the internal reporting system. State fire director Karsten Homrighausen says: “Again, emergency services were attacked on New Year’s Eve. Nothing can justify this behavior and I can only condemn it in the strongest possible terms. Those who rush to help people in need and are then attacked must be protected. We will therefore report every incident again this year.”
The Berlin fire brigade deployed between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. for a total of 1717 operations in the city area Berlin out. These included 749 fires and 825 rescue operations. For comparison: In the Corona New Year’s Eve 2021/22 there were 1026 cases in the same period.
