Weather: why was 2022 an exceptional year in Calvados?

In the Calvadosthe weather of the year 2022 has been exceptionalaccording to the weather station Meteo France based in Carpiquetnear Caen (Calvados), this Sunday January 1, 2023.
Hottest year since records began!
The year 2022 is first of all remarkable because it is the hottest in Calvados since start of readings in Carpiquet, since 1951, more than 70 years! A average temperature of 12.6°C over the year was recorded in the department in 2022. Stopped figures as of December 22, 2022, pending the final statements.
The 2022 vintage is now ahead of that of 2020 (12.4° on average) and 2014 (12.2°) which were the hottest before.
The finding is identical in Normandysince 2022 is a record year in Manche and Orne with average temperatures of 12.3°C and 12.8C respectively over the past year.
July 18, hottest day ever
From hottest monthsmonth ago July 2022which constitutes a new recording on Normandy. In Calvados, the average temperature for this month of July is 26°C, more than 3°C above seasonal norms. Record also in Orne with an average of 27.8°C and in Manche with 22.8°.
The hottest day was observed on July 18. In Caen, the record was notably broken that day with a temperature in the shade of 40.1°C (former record 39.7°C on June 29, 2019). In the English Channel, the thermometer exceeded 40°C for the first time since the installation of the readings.
Another remarkable month in 2022: october. “The month of October was exceptionally warm, the mildest observed in all of Normandy”. It was in the second half of the month that the mildness set in, with average temperatures around 16-17°C. That is 1°C more than the previous record dating from 2005. On the other hand, there was no heat wave period, because the temperatures went down again at night, even in the middle of summer.
Also among the driest years
2022 was also marked by a deep drought. “There was a lack of rain during the winter,” notes a forecaster from Météo France. In effect, only three months have been excess precipitation: June, September and November. This is very little compared to other years when the winter and autumn months make reserves. ” There have been more than 40 days without rain in the heart of summer“.
The past year is therefore one of the 10 driest years since 1951, behind however years like 1953, 1976 or 1989, according to the Carpiquet weather station.
