Paulina Lee: The Korean woman who speaks fluent Greek, lives in Athens and makes a splash on TikTok
“I am very active on Tik Tok and the truth is that some people recognize me – this makes it easier for me to be able to communicate with the past in Greek, because usually they spoke to me in English first and were impressed when I answered them in Greek! Those who follow on TikTok and see on the street are very friendly to me, which I was also not used to. My daily life has changed from the point of view that I deal a lot with social media and with my mobile phone. I check which videos do well, which don’t, and what topics people are concerned about, what I could teach them. I discover the differences and similarities between the two countries and I get excited in turn!
Today I am a private employee in a multinational. Although I studied Computer Science at the Athens University of Economics and Business, I work in a quite different field. I would love to take my social media to a professional level, maybe that was my biggest dream. I really like this combination of independence and creativity that they give me.
I doubt I would choose to live in Korea forever. I would definitely miss Greece
The majority of the Korean community in Greece is located in Athens. We must be about 150~200 people from immigrant workers, 2nd generation Koreans, missionaries or even people who come to Greece for a short time as emissaries from their companies. They usually gather at the Korean church where the service is held every Sunday. In addition to this, there is also an organization, a president, vice-president and secretariat are elected, which organizes, together with the Korean Embassy, various events. In general, it is a very good and close-knit community, with practical solidarity, especially in matters that can make it difficult for some, such as bureaucracy, etc. Perhaps for some it will also provide relief from the stress of living as a foreigner in such a different country.
If someone wants to visit Korea, I would definitely give the following tips: to go in May or October, to have a 2nd cell phone with them to insert a Korean sim, in case google maps doesn’t work well, to download naver maps and have Revolut account for his transactions. For accommodation to stay in Seoul, you don’t have a bus or subway stop nearby. In general, you do not have in mind that the distances are long. There are also affordable Seoul Pass combination tickets. Finally, don’t be afraid to take your trip to the fullest!”.
