Legendary – The Salzburger Land
ARD alpha
Yesterday, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m
The Salzburger Land [Österreich]these are mountains and lakes, unspoilt nature and world-famous culture.
There are the mighty Alps, with the 3000m peaks of the Hohe Tauern in the very south of the Salzburg region. Among them the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain at almost 3800 meters. Especially now in winter with excellent ski areas, with thousands of kilometers of slopes. Equally monumental in the mountain is the Eisriesenwelt near Hohenwerfen Fortress – gigantic chambers, kilometers away in the mountain.
And there is Salzburg, in the very north of the Salzburg region, the fashionable, cosmopolitan city, festival venue and birthplace of Mozart. It attracts millions of visitors every year.
In a new episode of the “Sagenhaft” series, Axel Bulthaupt embarks on a wintry journey through the Salzburg region. He experiences a landscape with magical images that has never been seen before. A film with spectacular aerial shots.
He meets people who have shaped the country and those who shape the country.
Mountain guides and national park rangers, ice climbers and slope whisperers, a Saxon woman in Salzburg, a mask carver, a rock salt producer.
In St. Veit im Pongau, Bulthaupt roams the streets with the Krampus and the Perchten to scare children and adults. Deep in the Altaussee salt mine, you can see the rock salt being hewn out of the rock by hand, just as it was thousands of years ago. The unique location already inspired George Clooney, who filmed parts of his “Monuments Men” here.
In Hallstatt, Axel Bulthaupt asked himself whether he should really be diving for hidden treasures in wintry temperatures. Because the area is full of mysterious lakes in which gold, medals, rings, money and tons of weapons are still suspected. Leni Riefenstahl and Jacques Cousteau were there too.
At the airport in Salzburg, he was met by a real B-25 bomber, flown and restored by Hans Pallaske, a very special kind of airplane fanatic. With his self-made “Kitfox” he takes on airplane trips. In the hangar, various oldtimers are waiting to be used, including Tito’s private machine.
The Salzburger Land is a fabulous area full of surprises. A film with discoveries and individual images as well as very special people.
