Brussels Airlines kicks off a new year with a biofuel flight
The fuel comes from a batch of 2,000 barrels of 1,000 liters of blended fuel each, with 38 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), supplied by Neste. The sustainable part is made from waste and residual raw materials, such as cooking oil and animal fat waste.
There has been a demand for SAF from Brussels Airport and large user Brussels Airport for some time. It now flowed from the Neste factory in Ghent to the airport via NATO’s CEPS pipeline.
“In order to achieve our climate goals, we will have to increase the use of alternatives to fossil fuels in recent years. In addition to fleet renewal, sustainable jet fuel is the most effective tool currently available to reduce air travel emissions,” said Brussels Airlines CEO Peter Gerber. .
“Together with the Lufthansa Group, we have been investing in the production and use of SAF for several years now. The fact that we can now also get the fuel from the manufacturer to the plane at Brussels Airport in a fast and environmentally friendly way is an important step to increase the use of this type of fuel in the short term.”
