All about the Académie de la Mer that Monaco will host in the summer of 2024
The announcement was made on Tuesday, following discussions at the launch of Méditerranée du Futur – a Euro-Mediterranean meeting of territories and adaptation to climate change which took place in early December in Marseille: Monaco will host an Academy of the Sea. In the boxes for a few years, this idea had to be put on hold because of the health crisis. But now, all the lights are green so place to the concrete.
We explain to you what this environmental project should apply to.
What will the Academy consist of?
It will take the form of a Monegasque association and will be a teaching institute, in French, on three themes dear to the Principality. The first discipline will focus on the law of the sea, another on the geopolitics of the seas and oceans, in other words international relations, and finally the third course will focus on environmental issues related to the first two disciplines.
The training will be delivered in intensive form in the space of several weeks only. Lectures could also be given occasionally. As for the courses, some will be permanent but others will change and will be flexible according to the news.
When ?
The Académie de la Mer wants to be a kind of summer school. It will therefore only take place during the summer period. However, there is not enough time to be able to organize the first teaching cycle for the summer of 2023. The organizers are therefore counting on a premiere in the summer of 2024, while the project takes shape.
Renaud Muselier, President of the South Region and project partner (read more) is due to travel to the Principality in March on the occasion of Oceans Week to disclose more information on this project. The statutes of the association must be signed by then.
Where ?
If for the moment the precise location of the Academy is not known, it will be in the Principality. It remains to find premises with amphitheatres capable of accommodating several dozen people for lectures in particular.
For who?
The courses will be aimed at students at Bac +4 or Bac +5 level or at professionals in the maritime environment. They operate, at the end of the education cycle, a diploma issued by the Institute of Political Studies of Aix-en-Provence. Several promotions of 30 to 40 students will be created and entry will be by file only.
By who?
For the moment the teachers have not been chosen. On the other hand, the will is to leave room for scientists to express themselves. Academics and professionals from the private sector will be called upon.
Whether among students or teachers, the enthusiasm would have already been felt.
Rewarding partnerships
Like the Southern Region, which wishes to be associated with the project, the Academy wishes to attract other partners from the education sector on the southern shore of the Mediterranean. Algerian and Egyptian representatives will also be involved in order to participate in some way in this project which, in the long term, wants to concern all the seas and oceans.
Red and white speakers
The idea is also to publicize Monegasque know-how by presenting international institutions that are in Monaco and involved in the sector. The International Hydrographic Organization and the IAEA Environmental Laboratories, all based in the Principality, are being approached.
