Walking to school: 1st place for Von der Pfordten elementary school – muenchen.de
They have cycled, ridden a scooter or walked: The approximately 500 children at the Von der Pfordten elementary school have proven that it is possible to get to school safely, quickly and in an environmentally friendly way without a parents’ taxi. On 20 school days in October and November, the children reached school on average 18.5 times in a climate-friendly manner and thus took first place in the “Fit in school, fit for the future!” competition. For this they were congratulated by mobility officer Georg Dunkel and the school was awarded a plaque.
As part of the “Fit in school, fit for the future” competition, elementary school children are taught the connections between everyday mobility decisions and their influence on the climate. Less car traffic in front of the schools also increases road safety for the children.
A total of 43 Munich elementary schools took part in the competition organized by the mobility department. Every child who covered the last 250 meters to the school gate in a climate-friendly manner was allowed to stick a snowflake on a poster as an incentive and thus symbolically build a protective cave for the seal children on the poster. During the competition period, more than 162,000 snowflakes were glued to primary schools in Munich and the same number of trips to school were made in a climate-friendly manner. The competition took place for the second time in 2022 and will be repeated in 2023. More information can be found at https://muenchenunterwegs.de/angebote/fit-in-die-schule.
Mobility officer Georg Dunkel: “The students have shown that you don’t need a car to get to school. Traveling to school in an environmentally friendly way is also healthier and safer – and the children also enjoy it. My heartiest congratulations!” Attention editors: Photos of the award ceremony can be requested from the Press Office of the Mobility Department by sending an email to [email protected].
