Eliesse Ben Seghir in the footsteps of Thierry Henry
Does Ligue 1 Uber Eats hold a new nugget? After Désiré Doué (Stade Rennais FC) and Wilson Odobert (ESTAC Troyes) a little earlier in the season, a new talent emerged on Wednesday evening on the occasion of the 16th day of the championship. Entrance to the break of the meeting between AJ Auxerre and AS Monaco in place of Wissam Ben Yedder, Eliesse Ben Seghir, until then anonymous, simply slammed a double at just 17 years and 315 days old and allowed ASM to win 3-2 in a badly embarked match. For his first steps in Ligue 1 Uber Eats, the native of Gassin (Var) and younger brother of Salim (19), currently playing at OM, thus scored his first two goals in the space of twenty- seven minutes.
He first gave ASM the advantage with a flat left foot after a very good shift from Aleksandr Golovin (1-2, 58th), then did it again at the end of the match with a sumptuous curling strike from the right, without looking at the position of Benoît Costil, from outside the area after having deposited part of the Burgundian defense (2-3, 85th). On this one, we can say Philippe Clement had a hollow nose when he launched his very young attacking midfielder in place of his captain. Arrived at the Monegasque training center in 2020 after passing through SC Cogolinois and EFC Fréjus-Saint-Raphaël, the young man of Moroccan origin signed his first professional contract on August 5, until June 2025, and has was able to earn credit during the truce of the World Cup.
“Eliesse has great potential”
” I saw him in our friendlies against Fiorentina (1-1, December 17)London (4-2, g 21) and he entered the Europa League against Red Star Belgrade (4-1, November 3), said Philippe Clément after the meeting. I knew he could bring something by entering. He did it fast and well. (…) It is not a surprise. He showed things in this match that we have already seen in recent times. The club is lucky to have this type of players and young people. For me, there is no difference between a player of this age and another over 30 years old. You have to give the chance when it is deserved. Eliesse naturally has great potential for progression. »
Following this rare performance, Eliesse Ben Seghir became the youngest player to score a brace for his 1st Uber Eats Ligue 1 match in the past 75 years. But that’s not all, he also made a sensational entry into AS Monaco’s precocity records. He is now the fifth youngest player to have scored for the princely club in Ligue 1 Uber Eats (behind Kylian Mbappé, Pietro Pellegri, Thierry Henry and Benoît Badiashile), as well as the 2nd youngest to have scored twice in the elite behind Thierry Henry (17 years and 255 days) in 1995. In short, on the lawn of Abbé-Deschamps, the boy was in a hurry.
