Salzburg: Piste ski tours at a glance: Touring in the Salzburg region
Salzburg, the land of plenty for ski tourers – we have put together an overview of six piste ski tours in our Austrian neighbours:
Salzburg – The numerous ski areas in the Austrian state of Salzburg have long since been discovered by ski tourers. Many ski areas offer specially created ascent routes for tourers – with downhill runs on the slopes. Beginners and professionals alike will find what they are looking for:
Kitzsteinhorn in Zell am See
Am Kitzsteinhorn ski tours are possible even in autumn and spring. The “Snow Queen” with 474 hm and the “Icebreaker” with 899 hm are two signposted piste toursdie in Langwied at almost 2000 m start. Langwied can be reached by cable car. Piste closure from 5 p.m. Dogs are not allowed.
Obertauern
Obertauern with its masses of snow attracts alpine skiers and ski tourers alike. Around the place, ski tourers can go both off-road and on the slopes numerous peaks subdue. Piste tourers can climb up the edge and look for any destination, such as this Search Kareck.
Zwölferhorn in St Gilgen
That Zwölferhorn is the panoramic mountain in the Salzkammergut. Ski tourers can either ascend directly from St. Gilgen or from Tiefbrunnau. Lift operation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. But be careful: the slopes are not groomed. Parking at the Zwölferhorn cable car per hour: 2 euros. Or in the community: short-term parking zone or daily fee of 4.50 euros.
Wieserhorndl in Krispl-Gaißau
die Lifts in Gaißau-Hintersee are at a standstill. It is still unclear how the ski area will continue after the operator’s bankruptcy. For ski tourers this means at the moment: Free, unprepared slopes with a climb along the slopes. The Spielberg and the Wieserhörndl can be climbed up to the summit. Parking fee: 12 euros.
Hochkeil in Mühlbach am Hochkönig

Approximately from Arthur House in Mühlbach out running a touring trail, who gives tips for beginners on the right ascent technique and behavior in the terrain. The path is well marked and free of oncoming traffic from skiers.
Hornspitz in Russbach
That Dachstein West ski area has one for ski tourers New touring route in Russbach created. The ascent of the Atomic Backland ski touring route takes around an hour and a half. Ascent possible daily from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Thursdays until 7 p.m. Touring ticket: 10 Euro.
DAV rules for ski touring on slopes
- The ascent and descent is at your own risk and responsibility.
- Only climb up at the edge of the piste! In a row, not next to each other. Watch out for skiers!
- Beware of crests, narrow places, steep slopes and icy slopes. Cross slopes individually if possible. Do not cross at blind spots.
- Piste closures, warnings, local regulations of the ski areas.
- Slope work = closure! The use of winches means danger to life for skiers!
- Only ski on the edges of freshly groomed ski slopes. In the dark: wear a headlamp and reflective clothing!
- Watch out for avalanche danger! Only open pistes are protected against avalanches.
- Only go on a tour when there is enough snow to avoid damage to the ground cover!
- Be considerate of wild animals! At dusk and in the dark, the animals are disturbed. Do not take dogs on ski slopes.
- Observe parking rules, pay parking fees, arrive environmentally friendly.
