How much coal and where did Poland import in 2022. The record was almost broken
This year alone, we will import nearly 7 million tons of hard coal to Poland more than a year ago. However, the raw material does not come from Russia, but from South Africa or Kazakhstan.
From the beginning of the year to the end of November, a total of approx. 17.4 million tonnes of hard coal was imported, including over 14 million tonnes of thermal coal. According to the information provided to “Parkiet” by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the cost of effective energy was imported from Kazakhstan: 2.63 million tons. South Africa comes second with 2.52 million tonnes. Russia is still in place, but this is mainly due to the delivery, which takes place until April this year. 2.33 million tons came to Poland from this direction. However, more are being treated from Colombia, Australia and Indonesia, respectively 2.15, 1.76 and 1.36 million tonnes.

For comparison, in 2021, imports from South Africa, Australia and Indonesia in the statistics do not reach anywhere, and from Kazakhstan and Colombia were 0.52 and 0.61 million tonnes, respectively. Throughout 2021, hard coal imports to Poland amounted to 12.7 million tonnes, including approx. 9.1 million tonnes of thermal coal.
As you expect, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, in December this year. then reach 2 million tons. This means that in 2022 we transport approx. 19.5 million tons of coal from abroad to Poland. The last time such an amount was imported was in 2018, when we imported nearly 19.7 million tonnes, mainly from Russia, not much more than now. Now we are replacing the eastern direction with others, which is the reason. The enhanced supply of coal results from the decision of Prime Minister Morawiecki, who obliged the companies from the State Treasury, Polska Grupa Energetyczna and Węglokoks, to import 5 million tons of coal for the needs of individual persons. The Ministry of Culture and Environmental Protection checks that between January and April 2023, approximately 7.8 million current tons will arrive in Poland.
