Environmental component accelerated in new airport charges at Brussels Airport
The new air fares at Brussels Airport have been set for the period from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2028. Due to the high rising and increasing energy prices and their impact on the airport’s cost base, the fares are indexed by an average of 11 percent. In addition, there is also an adjustment of the rate structure based on noise and emissions, the airport operator reports in a press release on Wednesday.
The rates are set for a period of five years after consultation with the airlines and under the supervision of an independent economic regulator.
Aircraft are destroyed in eight noise categories. Since 2016, the quietest aircraft paid up to three times less than the loudest aircraft at Brussels Airport. In the new tariffs, the environmental component is reinforcement, as a result of which the loudest, most polluting devices pay up to 20 times more than the quietest, most modern devices.
In addition, NOx, a benchmark for measuring nitrogen oxide emissions, is also taken into account in the tariffs for the first time. Those who emit less NOx also pay less. “All factors together (time of day or night, aircraft type, weight, etc.) it ranges from a few tens to hundreds of euros,” spokeswoman Ihsane Chioua Lekhli outlines.
The share of flights performed by aircraft in the three loudest categories has decreased at Brussels Airport in recent years from 16 percent in 2016 to 5 percent in 2022. In addition, the sharing of flights by aircraft in the three quietest categories has been reduced from 20 percent in 2016 to 31 percent in 2022. This means that today almost one in three flights is already operated with the most modern aircraft.
With the new rates, Brussels Airport will give the airlines an even greater incentive to focus on the further modernization of their fleet, concludes Brussels Airport.
