SPÖ-Deutsch: “The food prices must go down – food must not be a luxury in Austria!”
SPÖ confirms 3-point plan for affordable food by eliminating VAT, national gas price caps and increased price controls
Vienna (OTS/SK) – As the APA reports today, Tuesday, according to a recent survey, 93 percent of people are in favor of statutory price caps or subsidies. For SPÖ federal manager Christian Deutsch it is clear that “the turquoise-green government must finally take action and put an end to the food price explosion”. Because: “Everyday shopping has become a major financial problem for more and more people. The lines in front of the social markets are getting longer and longer,” said Deutsch, who confirmed the SPÖ’s call for an immediate stop to inflation. “While the turquoise-green government looks on idly as prices explode, the SPÖ has presented a concrete plan to combat food price increases,” said Deutsch, who advocated the immediate cancellation of VAT on staple foods, the introduction of a national gas price cap and calls for increased price controls by the competition authority. “The prices have to come down. Eating must not be a luxury in Austria!” English tells the SPÖ press service. ****
“Food prices have skyrocketed in recent months. Meat became 16 percent more expensive in November, milk, cheese and eggs by almost 21 percent and butter by as much as 37 percent,” said Deutsch, who emphasized that the SPÖ had presented the right solutions in the fight against record inflation. In addition to reducing food prices by 10 percent by temporarily suspending VAT, the SPÖ is pushing for a national gas price cap. In concrete terms, Austria should buy gas and pass it on to power plants, households and the economy at a capped price of a maximum of 50 euros per megawatt hour – this would help fight inflation at the root and the prices of energy-intensive products such as butter would drop significantly. Deutsch calls on the proposals to “end their hibernation and finally implement the SPÖ’s concrete plan so that people in Austria can once again afford to shop in supermarkets”. (close) ls/mb
