1. 1993 Independence
The new freedom of global democracy and the democracy of the whole debate, the debates that have been decade-long and brought to the surface unresolved for a long time. The position of Slovakia and Slovak-Czech relations proved to be key for further development. The concept of the federation did not work out. After the electoral victory of HZDS, SDĽ and SNS in June 1992 in Slovakia and the formation of a coalition led by Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar, the Declaration of Sovereignty followed.
The Federal Assembly finally decided that on December 31, 1992, the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic would cease to exist. On January 1, 1993, the Slovak and Czech Republics became its successors. Slovakia was gradually recognized by the whole world and became a member of the World Bank, the United Nations and the Council of Europe.
2. 1993 The first president
On February 15, members of the National Council of the Slovak Republic elected HZDS candidate Michal Kováč as the first president. For the first time, the citizens of Slovakia elected their president only in 1999. The winner of the first direct presidential election was Rudolf Schuster. Ivan Gašparovič, Andrej Kiska and Zuzana Čaputová, who in 2019 became the first woman in this position, took turns in the post.
3. 1993 Slovak crown
In January 1993, Slovakia did not have its own currency. It was only in February that the currency split occurred and the Slovak crown began to be used. Therefore, special stamps were affixed to Czechoslovak banknotes, which were supposed to distinguish those used in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In total, around 120 million pieces with a nominal value of 40.64 billion crowns. The first Slovak banknote with a nominal value of Sk 50 entered circulation at the end of August 1993. The last ringed banknotes definitively lost their validity at the beginning of the following year.
