Green light for outdoor swimming pool in Brussels
The long-awaited Brussels outdoor swimming pool will be built on the former slaughterhouse site in Anderlecht. The plans were already there, now there is also the approval of the Brussels government. This has been published in a press release by the Brussels State Secretary for Urban Planning Pascal Smet (one.brussels-Vooruit).
The bullet is through the church: Brussels is getting an outdoor swimming pool. The swimming complex will consist of an indoor and swimming pool, which will be built on the roof of the Manufakture building on the Abattoir site in Anderlecht. In February, Brussels received a permit for the construction of the project. The Brussels Urban Planning Company (MSI) will now further develop the project and investigate the exploitation possibilities. There is no delivery date yet.
The total cost of the swimming pool project is estimated at 20.2 million euros. Flemish Minister of the Interior Bart Somers (Open VLD) confirmed that the Flemish government will contribute 3.4 million euros. The Flemish Community Commission and urban.brussels are jointly contributing 4 million euros to the structural works. For the other millions that the municipality of Anderlecht and various governments join forces, and funding is also counted on from the ERDF fund (European Fund for Regional Development).
High noodle
The call for an open-air swimming pool in Brussels is loud. The non-profit organization Pool is Cool has been striving for this for years and with the support of crowdfunding Current on legs, a pool that can accommodate 30 swimmers. In the summer it is permanently filled simultaneously. Based on his involvement in the Flemish Community Commission (VGC), Pascal Smat (One.brussels) is making 100,000 euros available for the organisation.
They are bright spots in a city that is looking for more swimming opportunities during the summer. In 2018, the Océade water park on the Heysel closed its doors for good. Overheated citizens seek refuge in the elderly, such as in the Blaarmeersen in Ghent, which leads to riots time and again. There would also be one in 2024 permanent swimming pond have to come to Neerpede.
Anyone who wants to swim laps in Brussels during the Christmas holidays should take the energy crisis into account. The swimming pools of Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe and Sint-Joost-ten-Node will close their doors until 2 January to reduce energy bills. That of Uccle is temporarily closed for maintenance work.
