The port of Bilbao donates a 22,000 m² plot of land to the city for free
The relationship of the port of Bilao with its riverside municipalities continues in its line of good neighborliness, this time with the new step taken by its Board of Directors it has given a definitive “green light” to the transfer to the Bilbao City Council of a plot of land in the Olabeaga neighborhoodonce the previous administrative formalities have been completed.
The unaffected plot, and ceded free of charge, includes a large part of the riverside promenade that connects the Olabeaga neighborhood with the neighboring Zorroza neighborhood, with an approximate area of 22,000 square meters. In the assignment, it is determined that its future destination must maintain its current use of public utility and social interest as a land vehicle, promenade, park, and recreational areas for children and adults.
Long history of collaboration
We must remember that during the last decades the Bilbao Port Authority has been ceding free port areas to riverside towns. For example, in the Biscayan capital, the promenades on both banks of the estuary or the Abandoibarra area, where the infrastructures of the “new Bilbao” are now being built.
Now, the Bilbao City Council will be able to continue the actions that have been developed for the recovery and use of the spaces included in the so-called “Punta Zorroza Shock Plan” and its connection with the urban center through the Olabeaga neighborhood. , consolidating a situation that has been occurring “in fact”, given that the City Council has been managing and maintaining the pedestrian promenade.
Getxo, Leioa, Portugalete and Sestao
Other municipalities benefiting from the free transfers of the port of Bilbao have been sestao, with the surface of the Benedicta sports center and annexed urbanization; Getxo, in the Campa del Loro area, next to the cruise terminal”Olatúa”; Portugalete, with the pools of the Churruca pier; or Leioa with the highway the vega of lamiako, ceded for a pedestrian and cyclable promenade. This policy of free transfers, in which progress will continue in the coming years, aims to make these spaces available to the citizens of the riverside municipalities.
Some of these port spaces were being used by the affected municipalities through the corresponding concessions or authorizations by the Port Authority, in such a way that these free transfers allow them to be provided with a definitive administrative solution.
