Munich Airport: Full operation and fully occupied – Freising
Christmas time is also travel time. After two years of reduced operations due to the restrictions caused by the corona pandemic, Flughafen München Gesellschaft (FMG) expects almost 11,000 flights to 150 destinations worldwide and up to 1.3 million during the Christmas holidays, from December 23 to January 8 passengers.
To ensure that all passengers get to their destinations, all operational areas at Munich Airport are also occupied during the Christmas period, as reported by the FMG press office. At FMG and its subsidiaries, up to 800 employees are on duty on Christmas Eve alone. Lufthansa’s last departure on Christmas Eve is at 10:45 p.m. to Bangkok. The last landing at 11:15 p.m. is a machine operated by the Portuguese airline TAP with a flight from Lisbon.
Most flights go to Spain during the Christmas holidays
Most of the flights lead to Spain during the Christmas holidays with around 450 starts, as reported by FMG. Italy follows in second place, with 430 machines flying to 13 locations during the holidays. Around 300 jets take off from Munich to France and destinations in Greece and Portugal are served 117 times each. In long-distance travel, 290 departures are scheduled for North America to a total of 15 destinations in the USA and Canada. According to FMG, 123 trips will be to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia. In addition, planes each take off from Munich 34 times in the direction of Bangkok and Singapore. Twelve flights go to Seoul in South Korea during the holidays.
Those who fly away sometimes come to the airport by car. Until Sunday, January 8th, Munich Airport is offering one week of “economy” parking from 37 euros. A “City Trip Special” on New Year’s Eve in the P20 car park near the terminal can be booked online from EUR 49.
On Christmas Eve, an ecumenical Christmas Vespers takes place in the Christophorus Chapel
If you don’t fly, you can still visit the Christmas and winter market at the airport until Monday, December 26th. Shops and restaurants at the airport are open until 9 p.m. on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Only on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve do many shops and restaurants close at 5 p.m., FMG reports.
Those who don’t want to fly or shop can celebrate the ecumenical Christ Vespers in the Christophorus Chapel in the central area on Christmas Eve at 4 p.m. together with passengers and airport staff and employees. On New Year’s Eve there is an ecumenical year-end service in the chapel at 5 p.m. Church services are also offered in the chapel on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Epiphany, each at 10 a.m. For the service on Christmas Eve, registration is requested by e-mail at [email protected] or by telephone at 089/975-90924.
