The acceptance of Bulgaria into Schengen in October has been agreed
There is a clear commitment to the admission of Bulgaria to Schengen in October 2023. This is what the Minister of Justice Krum Zarkov said on Wednesday to Nova TV. In his words the deadline was agreed during the lower council meeting in Brussels last week.
Radev is convinced that in a year Bulgaria will enter Schengen
Zarkov commented that for the first time, Bulgaria has a specific deadline for Schengenwhich is “the result of the intensive work of the office throughout the week and strong international authority in the person of President Radev”.
Krum Zarkov also said that now everything depends on the reform parliament and the adoption of several that are related to the rule of law. According to the minister of our country, the reports that the Netherlands expects related to the monitoring mechanism should not be used.
“We should not be swayed by these reports. According to the so-called “horizontal mechanism” has reports every year and they are not only about Bulgaria. These reports in themselves should not scare us, we have fulfilled our commitments,” said Zarkov.
Bulgaria’s Schengen membership is blocked by Austria and the Netherlands, and Romania is suspended only by Austria. With a unanimous decision from January, Croatia became a full member of the free movement zone. The Netherlands wants the European Commission to make another report on Bulgaria under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, although the monitoring will be stopped at the end of 2019, recalls Mediapool.
In Austria, political parties are divided and have criticism against Vienna’s official decision to suspend Bulgaria and Romania. Austria is tying its agreement to Schengen enlargement to the implementation of its five-point plan, among which is strengthening the protection of the external borders. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer also holds on the construction of a much more secure wall along the Bulgarian-Turkish borderwhose value is estimated at 2 billion euros. Austria insists on being paid by the EU, while the European Commission is against this project. According to the Bulgarian authorities, dialogue with the Netherlands is more difficult.
