Power cuts: commentary Toulouse is preparing
After the risk of tension on the electricity network, the City of Toulouse signed this Wednesday, December 21, a charter of commitment with the network manager, RTE. It undertakes to take action on electricity consumption in public spaces, in the event of power cut alerts.
The energy crisis is not yet over, but the situation seems to be improving. This Wednesday, December 21, Mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc signed a charter of commitment with the manager of the electricity transmission network, RTE. “The situation seems more favorable for the month of January than a few weeks ago”, indicates RTE’s South-West delegate, Erik Pharabod. He recalls that electricity consumption has fallen by 9% over the past four weeks.

However, the possibility of cuts is not completely excluded. As part of the EcoWatt system, measures could be taken, if necessary, to reduce the risk of load shedding. They were “a last resort”, according to Erik Pharabod.
No electric vehicle charging
Preventive actions will thus be applied according to the seriousness of the situation. That is, if the electricity consumption exceeds what the grid is capable of producing. Among the actions taken, we find, for example, limits on the lighting of sports equipment (swimming pools, football pitches) or superfluous advertising screens and neon signs. In the event of a red EcoWatt alert, more drastic measures will be taken, such as closing sports facilities at 5 p.m. or blocking access to charging stations for electric vehicles.

The role of individuals
The City of Toulouse is also committed to raising awareness of actions that can reduce electricity consumption, because companies and individuals also have a role to play. “The periods of high consumption are mainly in the morning between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and in the evening between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. We therefore call for certain activities to be postponed to the night and the afternoon, ”recommends Erik Pharabod. “There is an effort to be made on the electric heating”, he specifies.

This manager also pays attention to home lighting, household appliances on standby and the use of hot water tanks. Concerning companies, they are free to choose measures according to their capacities. More generally, they are prices for optimizing the use of heating and ventilation, for example in low-occupancy premises.
