Restored Russian-made set on display at Grand Pavlovsk Palace | Vecherka St. Petersburg
The restored furniture set of Russian work of the first third of the 19th century has replenished the exposition of the permanent exhibition “Russian residential interior of the late 18th – early 20th centuries.” on the first floor of the large Pavlovsk Palace, lost in the press service of the State Museum-Reserve “Pavlovsk”.
The set – two armchairs and eight chairs, upholstered in mahogany, with gilded mastic lining on the backs and comfortable legs in the form of stylized swans – sizes in the Portrait – in place of another set, which goes to the All-Russian Museum of A. S. Pushkin.
It is there that it is kept in the museum records, and we have had it under a contract since 1967. At that time, Anatoly Kuchumov, a well-known art historian and chief curator of Pavlovsk, created an exhibition of historical interiors, but our funds did not contain useful pieces of furniture made by Russian craftsmen at the beginning of the 19th century. Pavlovsk was helped by colleagues from another museum, who provided their things for storage.
The set, which now decorates the Portrait Room, entered the funds of Pavlovsk later and the requirements for restoration. Works on the restoration of the frame, replenishment of the loss of wood, painting, tinting, upholstery and other restoration operations proposed by the master from the Daedal company. We will again see in the exposition one of the branches of the All-Russian Museum of A. S. Pushkin.
