Seized 60 decoy birds protected in Genoa, many are injured
As part of the “The missing link” campaign, the Carabinieri of the Cites Unit of Genoa carried out shipments of checks during which they were found and seized 60 live birds illegally detained. Following the activity, six people were reported to the Judicial Authority.
During the checks, the regular possession of protected wild birds was verified, the legal availability of which is attested by a immovable ring in metal that accompanies the animal for a lifetime together with the documentation required by law. A ring that has the value of a “State Seal” and therefore cannot be counterfeited or used improperly.
The investigations were carried out in collaboration with accredited ornithologists by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and veterinarians and mainly involved birdlife keepers, authorized – Department of Agriculture, Tourism, Training and Employment – by the Liguria Region.
«The number of birds found – explain the soldiers of the Cite the Carabinieri Unit of Genoa – highlights a illicit business of particular importance, considering that the market value of a “recall” specimen can even reach 500 euros».
Birds are hunted with illegal techniques and highly harmful, then they are equipped with counterfeit rings to evade controls or deceive the final buyers. In such cases, among the hypothetical crimes there are, in addition to commercial fraud, counterfeiting and the abusive use of seals, receiving stolen goods, animal abuse (some specimens had traumatic injuries to the limbs due to manipulation aimed at ringing).
In recent days, the Carabinieri Cites of Genoa also denounced the owner of a laundry after having ascertained that he had put up for sale numerous items of clothing made with furs belonging to different species protected by the Washington Convention on endangered species (CITES), without adequate documentation.
Kodami has made a video reportarge, edited by Salvatore Ferrarafrom Lake Fusaro, at the gates of Naples, where he studies bird migration. Where do birds go when they migrate and why is it important to study migration are some of the questions we addressed Rosario Balestrieriornithologist and president of Ardeaan association of environmental protection that takes care of bird conservation. Balestrieri is a ringer and fielded a Ali Flegree project for monitoring avifauna in Campi Flegrei.
