Desislava Olovanova: Bulgaria treats refugees from Ukraine with unprecedented cruelty
How do you take care of the state for the Ukrainian refugees in our country? Why did the “Three Women” Foundation write an open letter to the office of the Republic of Bulgaria? Have you heard any of them, Desislava Olovanova from the “Three Women” Foundation commented to BNR.
“The things with the refugees from Ukraine are very tangled, complicated and difficult to navigate, not least because they are completely surreal. They flee their cities, they are collapsed to the basements. they have no chance to survive there because, for example, they would hardly be moved to a bomb shelter in case of an attack because they are disabled, or how a mother with five children runs to a bomb shelter. Accordingly, these people come here to be able to close and Bulgaria is the only country that treats these people with unprecedented cruelty.
I have no explanation as to why this has happened – why we have gone from a people who are compassionate to being the most cruel people in the world right now.
Because the governments have changed since the beginning of the war and each of them sits on a different spectrum of political colors, they are diametrically opposed, but nevertheless it has done the same thing – it has treated these people with national irresponsibility.
What governments are doing against Ukrainian refugees is a boomerang on our society. They educate our society to be apathetic. People see that the government is outright torturing these refugees, so they deserve to be tortured. So we won’t help them either. This is bringing up the government at the moment.
One of the reasons we are helping Ukrainian refugees is because we are trying to show those in power that this cannot be done. The attitude of the government at the moment towards disabled people, elderly people, mothers with many children who came to seek help in our country with the EU money that Europe paid to the Bulgarian state to take care of these refugees, the attitude of our country towards these people are what they are to our disabled, elderly people and mothers with many children. What our government is doing is genocide – against its own people, which is carried over as genocide against some people who are suffering asylum here. She people will run away. But our mothers and fathers are here and will continue to be victims of these same governments for the future. And where the money from the EU for refugees is, is the most deeply guarded state secret in our country.”
One word – nutrition
“The open no letter was a desperate move because on November 15 this year the caretaker government changed one word in its refugee provision. This money because it is winter and the hotels by the sea are not in active season. That is, the government still gives the same money to the hotels and bases, but they are no longer long enough to feed the refugees who are accommodated with them for this money. They keep them but don’t feed them. Those who did not escape from Bulgaria are elderly people or people with disabilities, invalids, or mothers with many children.
In one of the bases, which is located in Panichishte, they are 15 kilometers from the first settlement – 15 kilometers is the first table for a settlement, and from it there are another 2 kilometers to the store. These disabled and elderly people have to walk down icy roads for 15 kilometers and after going up 15 kilometers to buy something from the store. By stopping their feeding, they literally run out of food. No access to food. Do not have!
