Sharply rising electricity and gas prices, sharply falling temperatures… The fireplace for heating can once again become a solution for households with one. But here again, the price of wood has risen sharply and may prove to be a deterrent. A Paristhem Bois de Boulogne and Vincennes could be a source of dead wood. But is it legal to pick it up? Answers.
Dead wood, essential for biodiversity
L’National Forest Office (ONF) manages state forests, i.e. 25% of forests in France, the rest being private estates. Whether in a public or private forest, the collection of dead wood is prohibited by law. “Dead wood in the forest is not a sign of poor maintenance. On the contrary, it is essential for the biodiversity“, explains the ONF. Trees that are broken or dead naturally on their feet are preserved. They allow many insects, fungi, birds to lodge there. The ONF estimates that nearly 25% of forest animal and plant species depend on the presence of dead wood.
For private forests, it is here the principle of ownership that applies. Again, the collection of dead wood is prohibited and is therefore considered theft.
Wood donated to the City by the State
The ONF does not manage the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes, it is the town hall of Paris. “They were donated by the State in 1852 and 1860 to the City of Paris, which has undertaken to preserve in perpetuity their vocation as public promenade“, we explain to the town hall.
“Furthermore, it is forbidden to take samples, seeds, young plants, unless authorised,” she specifies.
A risk of a fine?
The City ensures that it is not in a process of verbalizationbut of to raise awareness the challenges of protecting biodiversity and ecological management of the two woods.
“Leaving dead wood in the undergrowth is a major challenge for preserving biodiversity in the woods and making them more resilient to environmental challenges so that they remain breathing spaces for Parisians. »
