Guðlaugur Victor returns to the national team
Guðlaugur Victor Pálsson is in the Icelandic men’s national soccer team that will face Estonia and Sweden in friendly matches in the Algarve in Portugal in January.
The first game took place on January 8 against Estonia and the second against Sweden on January 12, but Guðlaugur Victor was not with the team in the last mission, against Saudi Arabia and South Korea in November, due to injury.
Arnór Ingvi Traustason also returns to the team after a break, but Nakkvi Þeyr Þórisson and Aron Bjarnason are newcomers to the group. Only six players in the group have more than ten A national matches behind them.
The majority of the players are from teams in the Best League, but it is not a traditional FIFA national match window, and therefore Arnar Þór Viðarsson, the coach of the Icelandic team, could not use all the players he had in mind to select.
“January projects have become well established as part of the men’s national team’s calendar and have been used well over time,” said Arnar Þór on the KSÍ website.
“Of course, this is not a FIFA window, so clubs are not obliged to release players for the project. There is little to be done about it and we just respect it.
The group we have now is a good mix of players from various backgrounds and we are very excited about this project. We announced 22 players now, it is likely that the 23rd will be added, but that will be clarified later,” added Arnar.
