Permit ‘parking lot terraces’ extended until 2024 | Brussels
BrusselsThe ‘parking lot terraces’ may remain in place until September 2024, provided they meet a number of conditions. This is reported by the cabinet of State Secretary Pascal Smet (one.brussels-Vooruit). The provisional terraces were approved in April 2021 in the context of the corona crisis and its economic consequences for the hospitality sector.
The guidelines frame the placement of the terraces in the public space. Under certain conditions, they provide a permit exemption for terraces in parking spaces between April 1 and October 31 and during the end-of-year festivities. Given that these guidelines expire on December 31, 2022, it was important to inform the sector about their extension with the end-of-year celebrations in mind.
The guidelines provide a framework for all parties involved, support the catering sector and frame the quality of the terraces. In addition, the control of the catering terraces in the public space would be lifted and would be supported by the regional objective of bringing the number of parking spaces on the public road below 200,000. The Brussels government has also decided to extend until September 2024, the interim entry into force of the new Regional Urban Planning Regulation.
“Restaurants and cafes can keep their terraces in parking lots. I am happy to be able to bring this great news, want these terraces to become an important source of income,” says Pascal Smet. “Moreover, their place on the public road has also proven how the city becomes when residents, not cars, are given the necessary space.”
