The future of the defense of Bulgaria, NATO and the low union was discussed by an expert discussion organized by the Youth Association for Political Science. Participants in the forum are the former Acting Minister of Defense Prof. Todor Tagarev, the former Deputy Minister of Defense Yordan Bozhilov and the former Acting Minister of Defense Velizar Shalamanov.
There are those who are less willing to serve in the Bulgarian army, according to Bozhilov. According to the lack of modern technology is one of the reasons for this. Our army still has similarities with Russia and the main combat equipment is Soviet, he adds. Yordan Bozhilov creates that the scissor of differences between NATO allies is widening. If the Bulgarian army is not up to NATO standards, we have a problem and it is getting worse, the expert added.
It should be clear that Bulgaria is NATO, said Shalamanov. According to him, there are three characteristics of the defense policy – long-term, sustainability and resources. Everything familiar with the defense is quite expensive, he created. The trend in NATO is to focus on multinational forces, and Bulgaria is missing eight years in this regard. He added that one of the main problems of the Bulgarian Army is the poor condition of the infrastructure.
The basis of the low alliance’s defense remains NATO, Tagarev said. He adds that France is the main country that wants to have a duplicate defense structure of the Alliance in the EU. Tagarev established that Ukraine would not be the first country to which he would not provide military aid. Regarding the quality of the equipment that Bulgaria will send to Kyiv, I have no worries, added Tagarev.
