WTO found Turkey justified in the US’s additional tax decision on Turkish steel
The World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that former US President Donald Trump’s additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the world, including Turkey, were distributing global trade.
The three-person panel of the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism has declared that Turkey, China, Norway and Switzerland are appealing for Trump’s objection to additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
The panel decided that Trump’s additional customers’ duties on steel and aluminum imports should seize global trade, noting that the US measures did not comply with WTO rules.
Rejecting Trump’s once invoking ‘national security’ concerns to drive these additional taxes, the panel reported that these taxes were not imposed ‘during war or any other emergency’.
The Washington administration, however, condemned the WTO’s punishment. Noting that the organization’s group does not have to question national security decisions, the Washington administration noted that Trump plans to withhold tariffs.
“The US will not leave it to the WTO panels if you are going to make decisions about national security”
“The United States will not leave it to WTO panels to make the national security expert decision. It has no executive power,” said Adam Hodge, the U.S. Trade Representative. used use.
The United States has the right to appeal the WTO’s decision. It is stated that there is no expectation to oppose this.
The US administration has been preventing the appointments to be made to the laundry body of the WTO for 3 years, thus prolonging the process of solving the softening.
Additional tax decision on US steel imports
In March 2018, US President Donald Trump decided to spend 25 percent tariffs on imported steel for national security reasons.
Regarding the review in question, Turkey conveyed its request to the United States for necessary consultations, but could not obtain a positive result. Turkey, stating that the decision in question was against the WTO rules, had complained the USA to the WTO. Besides Turkey, China, Norway, India, Russia and Switzerland also brought the decision to the WTO. The WTO has not yet reached the sanctions against the objections of India and Russia.
Announcing that he removed the customs duties for steel and aluminum imported from Turkey on August 10, 2018, Trump said, “This rate will now be 20 percent for aluminum and 50 percent for steel. Our relations with Turkey are not good in this period.” had used.
After the US carried the customer tax used for Turkish origin steel products twice on 13 August 2018, Turkey also increased the additional financial burden rates applied on some US origin employers imports at the same rate.
On May 21, 2019, the United States had reduced the expected additional duties on steel imports from Turkey from 50 percent to 25 percent.
Last year, the US administration reached new agreements with the EU, Japan and the UK on the abolition of these additional taxes.
