Salzburg Festival 2023 with Kusej and Currentzis
Culture
The Salzburg Festival will take place next summer under the motto “The world is out of joint”. Intendant Markus Hinterhäuser relies on many large, well-known works – with the help of which he wants to address the existential questions of humanity.
179 performances are planned for the 2023 festival. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will kick things off – for the first time since 2015, the Lorenzo Da Ponte opera “Le Nozze di Figaro” is at the top of the Salzburg Festival programme. Martin Kusej is directing, the Vienna Philharmonic will conduct Raphael Pichon.
Hinterhäuser will undertake “Measurement of the World”.
Two operas by Giuseppe Verdi will premiere in the coming festival summer: “Macbeth” under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst and about two weeks later “Falstaff”, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher. As a further opera premiere, artistic director Hinterhäuser relies on Bohuslav Martinu’s Greek passion: “I am still so firmly convinced that it is only the great works of art that enable us to somehow read the world. They enable us to open up space for thought and reflection, and the operas are a survey of the world, based on Daniel Kehlmann,” said Hinterhäuser
Pernerinsel becomes the stage for dance theater
With Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s “Nathan the Wise” and Bertolt Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle”, well-established names of theater literature come to the stage. There will also be two world premieres, Michael Haneke’s “Amour” and Mareike Fallwickl’s “Die Wut – die remnants”. A dance theater on the Pernerinsel in Hallein (Tennengau) also celebrates its premiere in the summer: “Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar have created a completely new brand, they have achieved cult status. It’s a dance production that I think will captivate everyone,” says outgoing acting director Bettina Hering.
Currentzis with his Utopia Orchestra on the podium
The Greek-Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis has been invited to the culture festival again next year. Currentzis caused heated debates with his performance at this year’s festival summer – in 2023 he will be conducting his newly founded Utopia Orchestra. It is part of the concert program of the Salzburg Festival.
July 20th to August 31st
From July 20th to August 31st, the Salzburg Festival 2023 offers 179 performances in 43 days at a total of 15 venues. There are also 34 performances in the youth program “jung & alle*r”. Around 200,000 cards are issued. According to the festival, the total budget for 2023 is 67 million euros.
“Ticket prices only increased in the top segment”
The commercial director of the Salzburg Festival, Lukas Crepaz, said that the aim was to offer the audience prospective prizes even in economically challenging times. That’s why the prices have only been raised in the top segment, 50 percent of the tickets still cost between five and 110 euros, said Crepaz. The most expensive tickets for operas cost 465 euros.
