Police Tips: Scammers pretend to be their son or daughter
Two women in Tennengau and in the city of Salzburg have transferred four-digit sums of money to scammers because these are their child expenses. The police are now giving tips on how to prevent such crimes.
TENNENGAU, SALZBURG. Two women in Tennengau and in the city of Salzburg fell victim to con artists. The perpetrators pretended to be the women’s children on the cell phone and were able to persuade them to transfer four-digit amounts of money.
”Broken mobile phone” as an excuse
A 74-year-old woman from Tennengau received cellphone messages from a scammer in which her son appeared to tell her his cellphone was broken. Two days later, the supposed son asked the victim to make two transfers of a four-digit sum of money. Only then did the woman notice the fraud, after which the house bank could only reverse a payment that had been made. The same scam worked on a 55-year-old woman in the city of Salzburg. She also transferred a four-digit amount to her supposed daughter.
Tips from the police to avoid such cases
In connection with the information about these scams, the police give tips on how to prevent such cases:
- “If a single person contacts you on a new phone number with demands for money, check the old phone number or other contacts!
- If damage has occurred notify your bank transfer company immediately or your credit card provider and request a chargeback!
- File a complaint at the nearest police station!”
The police are also trying to draw the attention of the population, relatives and older people in their circle of acquaintances to scams and to explain to them how to react in the event of fraud.
