23 percent savings in gas consumption by the end of November – Liechtenstein
VADUZ – The government supports the EU’s voluntary savings target for natural gas in order to strengthen security of supply. This is intended to reduce gas consumption by at least 15 percent in the period from August 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 compared to the average gas consumption of the past five years.
The government has therefore commissioned “Liechtenstein Wärme” as the network operator to determine the reference consumption for Liechtenstein and to monitor the effective consumption in the period from August 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. As of the end of November 2022, the savings in gas consumption in Liechtenstein compared to the reference consumption were 23.6 percent (previous month 23.4 percent). This enabled me to save 19.3 million kWh of natural gas, which corresponds to the consumption of around 14 days in winter.
In addition to the savings due to the very mild weather in October, the savings can be explained by the reduction in consumption in households and companies, the replacement of natural gas-fired heating systems with district heating or heat pumps and the conversion of dual-fuel systems from natural gas to oil, according to the government release. In addition, the state administration and the municipalities would save heating energy by lowering the room temperature to 19 degrees.
Depending on the course of the heating requirement due to the weather, it can be expected that the percentage savings will be reduced in the coming months compared to the reference consumption.
