Morocco for the first time in the quarter-finals of a FIFA World Cup
Morocco will be in a quarter-final stage of the World Cup for the first time after beat Spain on penalties🇧🇷 A well-thought-out game, in a kind of chess, with the Spaniards creating more dangerous chances than the Moroccans in the 90 minutes of regular time, plus the 30 of overtime. A ball on the crossbar by Sarabia, in the additions of the second half of extra time, could seal the classification of the Europeans.
But I wanted the story to be different.
At maximum rates, the Moroccan goalkeeper Bono defended the charges of Soler and Busquets. Sarabia has landed a trip. For Morocco, the third hit was hakimiwhich sealed the country’s qualification for the quarterfinals of a World Cup for the first time.
“We had a very difficult game. Morocco was all defense and that was tiring us. On penalties, it was cruel. A very tough night today. We have to raise our heads and that this serves as an example in the future. We have to move forward”, Sergio Busquetsof Spain, in an interview with the International Football Federation (FIFA) after the game.
“I think we played a huge game. The players followed the instructions and we knew we would get tired. We didn’t play to reach penalties, but it had to be that way. This victory was for the Moroccan people. In Africa we need to believe. Why not?” to win a World Cup? We have heart and energy”, praised the coach of Marrodos, Walid Regragui for the official FIFA broadcast.
“Thank God, I want to thank all my teammates for the game they played today. I want to congratulate the Moroccan people who supported us a lot. Let’s go ahead to give more joy to our people”, said the Moroccan goalkeeper, bono, for FIFA. “I concentrated and hit the corners,” she added.
Before that, the best campaign of the “Lions of the Atlas” – as the Moroccan team is known, in reference to the Atlas Mountains located in the country – had been in Mexico, in 1986, when they were in the round of 16 after losing to West Germany by 1 a 0.
At the World Cup in Qatar, Morocco finished first in group F, with seven points: victories over Belgium (2-0) and Canada (2-1) and a draw against Croatia (0-0). There were four goals scored and only one conceded which, curiously, was against defender Aguerd, against the Canadians.
Portugal wins and convinces with 6 to 1 over Switzerland
The Portuguese team did not give chances to its Swiss counterpart, with a 6-1 victory, goals from Gonçalo Ramos (3), Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leão. Akanji cashed for Switzerland.
It was a fine gala display by Portugal, which started with Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench. From the first moments, “Equipa das Quinas” gave rhythm to the game, with possession of the ball and creating good scoring opportunities. At 17 minutes, Gonçalo Ramos, from inside the area with a firecracker in the drawer, opened the scoring. A ball that reaches 106km/h. At 33 minutes, Pepe’s header went up more than everyone else and put it in the back of the net to make it 2-0, the scorer at half-time.
In the second half, nothing much different, with the Portuguese dominating the actions. At six minutes Gonçalo Ramos scored his second, Portugal’s third. Minutes later, a play played circled the ball from foot to foot from the defense field until it reached Rafael Guerreiro set: 4 to 0. At 13 minutes, akanji pushed for the goal after a corner kick and was sent off for the Swiss. But there was still room for a third in the game for Gonçalo Ramos. The ‘hat-trick’ happened at 22 minutes. In stoppage time: 6 to 1, final score and indisputable victory.
Portugal goes in search of the unprecedented title. The best Portuguese campaign was in the 1966 World Cup, when it finished third. In this World Cup, the Portuguese finished first in group H, with six points in two victories – over Ghana (3 to 2) and Uruguay (2 to 0). The defeat was in the last match of the first phase, against the Republic of Korea (1 to 2).
So far eleven goals have been scored and five conceded. Gonçalo Ramos is the team’s top scorer in this World Cup. The Benfica striker has already scored four times.
